Altitude is one of the single biggest reasons Kenyan coffee — and specifically coffee from places like Nyeri, where Vendlite's beans are grown — tastes the way it does.

Here's the actual mechanism, not just the marketing line.

Cooler Air Means Slower, Denser Growth

Coffee cherries grown above 1,800–2,000 meters ripen more slowly than cherries grown at low elevation, simply because the air is cooler. That slower ripening gives the bean more time to develop sugars and acids before it's picked. The result is a denser bean with more complexity packed into it — which is why high-altitude coffee tends to taste brighter, more layered, and less flat than coffee grown closer to sea level.

Nyeri sits in the highlands between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range, most of it well above 1,700 meters and climbing toward 2,000+ in parts. That's not an incidental detail — it's the reason this region has been associated with high-quality coffee since Kenyan coffee farming took off in the early 20th century.

Volcanic Soil Does the Rest

Altitude alone isn't the whole story. The slopes around Mount Kenya are volcanic, which means the soil is unusually rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium — the exact nutrients coffee plants need to produce well-formed, flavorful cherries. Combine that soil with cooler high-altitude air and consistent rainfall, and you get a growing environment that's genuinely hard to replicate at lower elevation, regardless of how the beans are processed afterward.

Why the SL28 and SL34 Varietals Matter Too

Most of Kenya's high-altitude coffee, including what's grown around Nyeri, comes from two varietals: SL28 and SL34, both bred in Kenya in the 1930s specifically to perform well in this kind of environment. They're known for producing the bright acidity, blackcurrant-like fruitiness, and heavy body that Kenyan coffee is internationally known for. Altitude gives the plant time to develop that character; the varietal is what makes the character worth developing in the first place.

What This Means When You're Actually Drinking It

In practice, altitude is why a well-roasted Kenyan coffee doesn't need much dressing up. You'll notice it most in lighter or medium roasts, where the roasting process hasn't masked the bean's natural character — which is exactly why Vendlite roasts to a medium profile rather than pushing darker. Push the roast too dark, and you start burning away the exact complexity that altitude worked to build in the first place.
